My healing began when I attended my first Candlelight Vigil. Being around others with similar stories made me realize that I was not alone. One of the ways JSCK provides support to other families is by hosting an annual candlelight vigil. This gives us an opportunity to come together to remember, share, support and encourage one another.

Vigil in Chula Vista honors child victims

“I stand here before you today with a humbled heart for the incredible men and women we are in the presence of,” said Melina (Sellers) Phillips, mother of 9-year-old Jonathan who with his friend Charlie, 13, were kidnapped and murdered by the banks of the Otay River not far from the banquet hall.

19 years later, vigil honors slain boys

“I was hurt for so long, just going through the motions. I don’t know that I could have fully appreciated it back then as much as I did today because I’m fully awake now,” Jonathan’s mom, Milena Sellers-Phillips, said of the memorial.
